Q:
I just got a retriever puppy. Now what?
A:
Congratulations! Now the fun begins! As far as pups’ training is concerned, start with the basics. House training, leash training, and crate training are typically the first action items. Basic obedience commands should come very soon as well. A few examples of these commands would include, sit, stay, here, down, off, leave it, and place. These kinds of training activities will not only go a long way to helping pup become an addition to the family that you can live with, but will eventually be the foundation for future retriever and field training if you choose to do so.
There are many techniques for training your pup. Many books on this subject are available, as well as formal class that very in price. It is recommended that you spend some time researching such techniques, and establish a regular training pattern. Above all, keep it light, fun, and enjoy your new pup.
Q:
Can you recommend a breeder or professional trainer?
A:
As a rule, the club does not endorse any specific breeder or trainer. We do highly recommend that you do your research before purchasing a dog, or training services from any one. The American Kennel Club (AKC), as well as many other larger organizations has some great resources to help you choose a breeder or trainer, and what kind of questions you should ask. These are very important decisions to make when bringing a new dog into your home, and should not be taken lightly. Take your time and do as much research on specific breeders and trainers as you can. Personal references can also be very helpful.
